Hurricane Season AC Checklist for Daytona Beach
Hurricane season overlaps with the busiest months for air conditioning on the Fun Coast. A short checklist protects equipment you rely on every day.
Request an AC contractorSecure the area
Move chairs, grills and pots away from the outdoor unit before a storm.
Anchors
Check that the unit is strapped or bolted to its pad or stand.
Power down
Turn the AC off at the thermostat and breaker as the storm arrives.
Condos
Follow building instructions for rooftop and balcony equipment.
After the storm
Look for debris, bent fins, a shifted unit or water in the electrical box.
Flooded units
Don't run a unit that sat in floodwater. Have it inspected.
Attic check
Roof damage can soak ducts and air handlers.
Restarting
Wait a few minutes after power returns before restarting.
Generators
Keep generators outside, away from doors and windows.

See AC repair.
Photos
Photograph the outdoor unit and data plate before the season for insurance purposes.
Covers
Remove any cover before running the system again.
Stands and platforms
Units raised on stands for flood protection should be checked for loose bolts and rust before the season starts.
Power surges
When power returns after an outage, surges can damage controls and capacitors. A surge protector at the outdoor unit adds protection.
Shutters and access
Make sure shutters and storm panels don't block the outdoor unit's airflow if you need to run the AC before removing them.
Book a check
If anything looks damaged after a storm, book an inspection before relying on the system in the heat that often follows.
Wet insulation
If water got into the attic, wet duct insulation and liner can grow mold. Have it checked and replaced if needed.
